Belkin developed an update to their NetCam line of home monitoring USB cameras, incorporating all-new custom camera hardware and a UX and UI upgrade to their existing mobile app (built on a third-party partner's app).

Justin worked on competitive research, UX and UI improvements to the app, prototyping (software and hardware), as well as consulting on- and observing the industrial design process for the camera hardware.

Usability issues were tackled for several use cases, including the setup process, selecting and viewing recorded video clips, registration for the paid subscription plan, visual communications of the camera's LED status light, and zooming in and out of the camera view.

UX specification documents

UX specifications for zooming out the camera view, via the mobile app.

Sketch UX flow of camera app’s zooming feature, showing app and server’s background processing for seamlessly displaying camera’s image at high-resolution during zooming. The zoomed-in view is a high-res live video image generated by the camera, which contains no visual information from the area beyond the zoomed-in frame. When the user zooms out (by pinching), the app will 'recall' a previously-captured zoomed-out static image and place it under the live video frame, to simulate the outer video regions until a live visual signal of those areas can be fed to the app.
